How I met Lowell Walker
My Divorce-
This is how it all began. I got divorced November 26th and waited a little over 7 months before I even thought about starting to date. My divorce didn’t come as a surprise, but in my heart I feel I tried my best to avoid it from happening.
Like most people, I’ve always longed for happiness. To me, some people seem to get it very easy, and others like me end up having to go through a lot in order to reach it. We all go through trials; of course, and I do believe all of our trials strengthen us and help us grow. Honestly, I’m done growing! (I mean that literally as well) Ha!
With the help, love, and support my family gave me; and of course, turning and reaching out to our loving Heavenly Father, I was able to get through it all. I can’t imagine where I’d be right now, or how my life would have turned out otherwise.
My Neighbor-
Back in December, my neighbor and friend Michelle Walker asked me if I had thought about dating anyone. It was a little too early for me, and I told her I wasn’t interested, but I’d let her know when the time came. I figured it would be maybe 2 or 3 years down the road. She did mention at that time that Larry, her husband, had a single brother and his name was Lowell. She didn’t go into many details, but it was obvious she was trying to set me up.
Time went by, and from what I remember, almost every time I saw Michelle, the questions would come up. “So, are you ready yet?” I have to say, Michelle has been a very special person in my life. I’m not sure how she knew, but when times were at their worst, she sensed it and was always there for me.
We meet people everyday, but only a few of those people can change and influence our lives. Michelle has definitely been one of those persons. She’s been a friend and sister, and most importantly I got to meet Lowell because of her.
The Dream-
Well, time went by very fast; when I least expected, it was already June. Something did happen to me that I’d now like to share with everyone. Maybe this was what I needed to help me realize that I was ready to move on.
One Thursday night, about 2:00 am; I woke up from a very persistent dream. Funny enough, I kept dreaming about Michelle Walker. In my dream, she kept saying over and over again “You need to date my brother-in-law. He’s a very nice guy and I know you two would make a great couple.” It was funny because the dream would end and then start all over again from the very beginning. It happened about 5-6 times during the night until I finally woke up. I thought seriously about why it was happening, and how maybe it meant something. Well, I couldn’t get it out of my mind, so I finally decided it was time to talk serious business with Michelle.
The Set Up-
That following Sunday, I walked up to Michelle, and before she could say anything to me about being ready, I told her. “Hey Michelle, I just want to let you know that I am ready now. I want to date your brother-in-law.” She was a bit surprised, but very happy. She mentioned she had recently spoken to Lowell’s mother, Joyce Walker and had commented to her that she was trying to set Lowell up with me. She said Lowell’s mother was very excited and that she told her that for some reason she had always had a feeling that Lowell would end up with a Latina. I smiled and felt those words reassured me about what was happening.
I don’t think I asked Michelle very many questions about Lowell. I just gladly accepted to go on a double date with them. I do remember one thing she mentioned about Lowell though; she said Larry had warned him over and over again to be sure he restrained himself from being his usual “Goof Ball.” I honestly thought it was pretty cute because I like “Goofy!” I did get warned though, and now I can see why she bothered to mention it to me. Lowell makes me laugh, and as you can see in most of our pictures, he always keeps a smile on my face.
The First Date-
When I first saw Lowell, I thought he was very handsome. Like the 007 type of handsome guy. The only thing that I was disappointed about was that he was 45 minutes late to pick me up. I later found out he had a delay at work and wasn’t able to leave at the time he had planned. As the date began, I was very glad to notice that he was a perfect gentleman! He would open my door and was very polite in every way possible; which by the way has not changed up to date. We went to Texas Road House and had a great time talking about all of Lowell’s and Larry’s early childhood mischiefs! I really was very glad to get to know him more, and we really did have a great time that night.
During the date, Lowell seemed pretty quite and maybe a bit shy. The thing I liked most was that he wasn’t the “staring / drooling” type. Lowell never made me feel uncomfortable at all during that first date. I remember I even wondered and thought to myself; “Hey, is this guy not interested in me or what?!”
I guess I really liked that because he wasn’t forward and he didn’t make it obvious that he was interested in me. The whole date I wondered if he was attracted to me or not, and I guess that’s what kept me interested for sure! : )
Before the night was over, Lowell had asked me to go out with him again, and of course, I gladly accepted!
The Rest is History-
Lowell and I dated every single day after that. I don’t think we’ve been apart from each other since. He has definitely passed the test; both with my sisters, and most importantly, with my children.
My whole family loves Lowell and my kids have grown very attached to him. I’ve only known Lowell for 4-and-a half months now, and it may not seem like enough time for most people, but it honestly feels like I’ve known him my whole entire life!
I have to say that at one point I did have doubts. I thought about possibly continuing to date and maybe not taking things so seriously. People kept telling me that he was the first guy I had dated, and that I should give others a chance. That I was young and should have fun first, and that it was crazy to get serious with the very first guy I have dated.
I remember I talked to my dad and told him how I was feeling. Surprisingly enough the answer he gave me blew away any doubt I might have felt or come across at that time.
He said to me: “Hija (daughter), it’s been about 2 years now that I have been praying and fasting for you to be able to have the life you deserve. I have humbly requested our Heavenly Father to please bless you with a man that can truly love you and care for you. All I’m going to say to you is that my prayers have been answered.”
I have gotten to know Lowell very well now, and I love him with all my heart! I know his heart and have no doubt that he has been one of the greatest blessings I’ve received from my Heavenly Father.
